Review (AllMusic) : When Once hit theaters in 2007, Glen Hansard had already pursued international fame for more than 15 years with the Frames. Although popular in Ireland, the singer's music wasn't nearly as omnipresent in other countries until the movie's release, which catapulted tunes like "Falling Slowly" into the spotlight. The Once soundtrack was also a big hit, turning Hansard's side project with simpatico songwriter Markéta Irglová into a full-fledged, award-winning, globetrotting band. While playing international venues and attending industry award shows, the two attracted additional attention for their real-life relationship, which effectively replaced Once's semi-tearful conclusion with a storybook ending. Released two years after the film's release, however, Strict Joy finds Hansard and Irglová going their separate ways, choosing to end their relationship while remaining in the same band. Hansard has used heartbreak for fuel in the past, and he keeps the blaze going throughout these 12 tracks. If the Once soundtrack was a bit spotty -- its track list culled from a haphazard array of old Frames songs, Van Morrison covers, collaborative material, and the musicians' own tunes -- then Strict Joy shows what the Swell Season can do with a singular theme and a solid backing band, both of which contribute to the album's cohesion. Van Morrison's influence is still apparent, particularly in the '70s-styled soul of "Low Rising," but the singer/songwriter ambience that permeated Once's music doesn't carry as much weight here. Instead, Strict Joy devotes more concern to exploring the lush, full boundaries of Swell Season's sound, which now includes tasteful doses of strings, electric guitar, and overdubbed harmonies. The results are quite often gorgeous, with songs like "The Rain" and "High Horses" building up to expansive, cathartic climaxes over the course of several minutes. Also striking are the performances by Markéta Irglová, who turns her fragile voice -- an instrument that always seemed detrimentally self-conscious on previous albums -- into something alluring on "Fantasy Man" and "I Have Loved You Wrong." It's testament to the band's vision that they remain focused despite such improvements; no amount of cinematic orchestration can change the fact that these songs are, after all, inward-looking tunes about heartbreak and personal struggle, and their lyrics resonate regardless of their wrapping paper. As a result, Strict Joy is a joy from start to finish, and few bands manage to mix intimacy and sweeping songcraft with such finesse.

Review (Written In Music) : Met het succes van de film Once en de Oscar die ze kregen voor Falling Slowly werd The Swell Season een onverwacht succes. Met het nieuwe album Strict Joy verrassen ze met een rijker gearrangeerd maar qua songs net zo sterk album als het debuut. The Swell Season ontstond toen zanger/gitarist, en voornaamste songschrijver van de Ierse band The Frames, Glen Hansard en de Tsjechische zangeres/pianiste Marketa Irglova met elkaar op tour, werden benaderd door de Tsjechische filmmaker Hrjbejk. Hij wilde dat ze een aantal Frames songs in gestripte akoestische versies voor zijn film ‘Beauty In Trouble’ zouden opnemen. Ze kregen 5 dagen om 3 songs op te nemen. Hansard en Irglova besloten om flink te profiteren van deze geweldige aanbieding. Ze kwamen met maar liefst 14 songs de studio uit. Natuurlijk werden de 3 songs in de film gebruikt maar met 7 andere songs werd ook gelijk een eigen album als The Swell Season vastgelegd. Het album, Hansard’s eerste buiten The Frames, werd een bescheiden succes. Rond dezelfde tijd werden zowel Hansard als Irglova benaderd door oud Frames bassist, ondertussen filmmaker John Carney. Hij wilde een film maken over een Ierse straatzanger die een muzikale gelijke vindt in een buitenstaander. Het ware verhaal van Hansard en Irglova dient daarbij mede als basis. Met een flink aantal songs van hun debuutalbum en een aantal nieuwe songs kwamen zowel de film als soundtrack tot leven. De zeer innemende film bleek al snel een onverwacht filmhuis succes. Met het winnen van een Oscar voor best filmsong voor Faling Slowly werd het duo ineens een Household name. Vooral in Amerika waar de The Swell Season vervolgens volle zalen trok en ze een geweldig succes werden. Met het succes van Once zet Hansard vervolgens The Frames op een zijspoor. De vrijwel volledige Frames bezetting speelde al wel live met The Swell Season mee maar nu gingen mee de studio in om een nieuw Swell Season album op te nemen. Het album Strict Joy is een fraai vervolg op het sobere debuut en de soundtrack voor de film. Uitbundigere songs die als een cross tussen folk en Ierse volbloed soul voelen en net zo hard je ziel raken. Waar het debuut als de verliefdheid voelde en de soundtrack als de liefde voelt Strict Joy, hoe tegendraads ook de titel, als het beëindigen als die liefde. Het levert een dikke lading prachtige emotionele liedjes op. De Ierse soul van albumopener Low Rising, het prachtig krachtige, aan The Frames verwante, The Rain en de absolute albumklassieker I Have Loved You Wrong zijn allen geniale popsongs waarvan er dit jaar maar heel weinig gemaakt zijn. De rest van de songs doen hier maar een heel klein beetje voor onder maar beklijven net zo gemakkelijk. Stricy Joy is één van de beste albums van dit jaar.
