THE RIVER DETECTIVES : SATURDAY NIGHT SUNDAY MORNING |
||
Label : WEA Release Date : 1989 Length : 36:27 Review (AllMusic) : Ahh..... Scottish catholics. This is one of the many fine bands that came out of Scotland in the 80s. This debut album from 1989 catches the band when they had shifted from an acoustic folk-rock group to a full electric combo although retaining their folky roots. Most of the songs pen down their personal landscapes, especially when they write songs about relationships and heartbreak. "Chains" ( a mild hit) , "You donīt know a thing about her" and "Love's like a needle" are catchy, hook-laden cuasi power-pop songs. Sing-alongs occur from the moment the record starts and the quality of the voices, the blend of the harmonies and the descriptive depth capture the listenerīs attention from the beginning. "The state of grace" and "the ashes and the tears" are staples of everyday working-class situations which reflect the hardship of finding independence and freedom in the stereotyped working surroundings of the 70s and 80s in the industrial cities of Scotland (.or anwhere else actually). "Factory" sums up a working-manīs life in 90 seconds. Great lyrics, foot- tapping beats and the record is over before you know it. It grows on you after each repeat Going from "Saturday night through to Sunday morning" encapsulates the elusiveness of those magical moments you live when life begins to unfold in front of you..... A must-have Review (Rate Your Music) : If there were any justice in this world this two guys should have sold a million copies of this very fine album. Catchy pop-songs from great songwriting. "Love's like a needle", "you won't listen to me", "Chains", and "Saturday night sunday morning" are the best among 12 great songs. Try this one out if you like folk-pop/rock. |
