Review : Outlaws In Scandinavia documents The Highwaymen - Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings and Kris Kristofferson - during their 1992 European swing, captured off a Swedish radio broadcast in soundboard quality. The set opens, fittingly, with the title track "Highwayman" before each member steps forward to run through a chunk of his own catalogue: Cash leans on "Folsom Prison Blues" and "Ring Of Fire," Kristofferson offers "Help Me Make It Through The Night" and "Sunday Morning Coming Down," Nelson brings "On The Road Again" and "Crazy," and Jennings contributes "I've Always Been Crazy" and "Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way." A round of "Band Intros" and a warm run through "Ghost Riders In The Sky" underline the easy chemistry between the four men, while "Desperado Waiting For A Train" and "Don't Take Your Guns To Town" show off the group harmonies that made the Highwaymen project more than just a country supergroup on paper. The soundboard source makes for a clean, well-balanced listen, putting the focus squarely on four legends trading songs and stories in front of an appreciative Scandinavian crowd.
