Review (AllMusic) : Assembling a compilation of the Beatles is a difficult task, not only because they had an enormous number of hits but also because singles didn't tell the full story; many of their album tracks were as important as the singles, if not more so. The double-album 1962-1966, commonly called the Red Album, does the job surprisingly well, hitting most of the group's major early hits and adding important album tracks like "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away," "Drive My Car," "Norwegian Wood," and "In My Life." Naturally, there are many great songs missing from the 26-track 1962-1966, and perhaps it would have made more sense to include the Revolver cuts on its companion volume, 1967-1970, yet the Red Album captures the essence of the Beatles' pre-Sgt. Pepper records. [1962-1966 received a deluxe reissue for its 50th anniversary, one containing an expanded track listing and a fresh remix by Giles Martin. The expansion corrects a couple of flaws on the original sequence of The Red Album by adding a good chunk of Revolver and several songs from George Harrison, who had no lead vocals or compositions in the 1973 incarnation of the compilation. Additionally, the enduring standards "I Saw Her Standing There" and "Twist and Shout" have been added to the album, making for a fuller picture of the Beatles' early years. The big news about this particular reissue isn't the expansion so much as the remix. Using the machine-learning technology developed for Peter Jackson's 2022 documentary Get Back, Martin was able to isolate elements of the original mixes, thereby allowing him to develop dynamic new mixes that employ the full range of the stereo spectrum. These new remixes retain the spirit of the original but leap from the speakers, sounding bigger and bolder than before.]
