SOUTHSIDE JOHNNY & THE JUKES : IN THE HEAT |
|
Label : Polydor Release Date : 1984 Length : 39:00 Review (AllMusic) : Atlantic (Atco) let Southside Johnny and Billy Rush produce themselves after things didn't work out with Nile Rodgers and Trash It Up. They tried a few covers in addition to Rush's well-meant but not classic originals, including Smokey Robinson's "Don't Look Back," and Tom Waits' "New Coat Of Paint." These gave diversity to the proceedings, but on the whole, this still wasn't great Jukes. Review (Amazon) : This 1984 album is very much of its era – lots of synthesizers and drum machines as Southside and company attempt to modernize the Jukes sound. Alas, it continues the trend from “Trash It Up” of a general lack of the signature Jukes horns and Stax/R & B sound. All but one of the original songs are written by lead guitarist Billy Rush, and none are particularly strong or memorable (“Over My Head” and “Tell Me Lies” are the best of the bunch). What redeems the album is a great cover of Tom Waits “New Coat of Pain”, with the classic Jukes sound, and a nice cover of The Temptations, “Don’t Look Back”. Beyond that, not much to recommend here. |
