ROY ORBISON : TEXAS 1987 |
|
Label : Red Line Venue : Rockefeller's, Houston, Texas, USA Date : January 1st, 1987 Length : 44:12 Quality : Soundboard Recording (A+) Review (Danny Stephens) : Not a week goes by that I don't have memories of Roy Orbison. Though I never knew him personally, I was a good friend of William "Bill" Dees, who died last year [2012] of brain cancer, and who wrote or co-wrote at least 65 songs with Roy, including "It's Over" and "Oh, Pretty Woman." The first time I ever saw Roy was right after he met Bill in Borger, Texas, at an unlikely venue called "The Aluminum Dome", probably in 1963. Roy hadn't yet come forth with many of his wonderful songs, but he still had a rabid fan base there in Borger (his "home" state). However, that's not my most memorable concert - that one took place at Rockefeller's in Houston, TX in 1987. Roy met my wife in the parking lot as he exited the Mexican restaurant next door, and he graciously talked to her and signed her ticket package for the night. What a night it was for us - the entire concert was recorded live, and a few years after he died I was lucky enough to score a copy (on VHS tape, but still worthwhile for sure). Now THAT is a memory. I almost always attended Roy's concerts in Houston with a few friends; on the day after he died [Orbison died on December 6, 1988], one of those friends heard a special message about him on the radio, but misunderstood its solemn import. He called me to tell me that Roy was coming back to town, and he'd be happy to get tickets for the whole gang. I cried as I told him what was really going on. That day I must have gotten at least a couple of dozen phone calls expressing grief. |
