ROBERT PALMER : LIVE SECRETS: BAND IN BOSTON |
|
Label : B4G Bootz Length : 55:37 Venue : Orpheum Theatre, Boston, Massachusetts, USA Recording Date : September 29, 1979 Quality : Soundboard recording (A+) Review : Live Secrets: Band In Boston captures Robert Palmer fronting a tight, funk-flavoured band in Boston at the end of the 1970s, when he was touring behind the album Secrets. The set leans on that then-fresh material, with "Bad Case Of Loving You (Doctor, Doctor)," "Jealous" and "Too Good To Be True" sitting alongside earlier favourites such as "Some People Can Do What They Like," "Every Kinda People" and "Best Of Both Worlds." Palmer's smooth, soulful vocals ride a groove-heavy rhythm section, and the show also reaches back to his roots with a reggae-tinged "Pressure Drop" and a medley that folds Little Feat's "Sailing Shoes" and "Sneakin' Sally Through The Alley" around "Hey Julia." Taken from the soundboard, the recording is clean, punchy and well balanced, giving every instrument room to breathe, and it remains a favourite among collectors as a snapshot of Palmer at his most blue-eyed-soul, before the polished pop image of the 1980s took over. This recording was released by Warner Bros. as a promotional vinyl album only. The album was never officially released. B4G Bootz made a nice CDR of it. This is what it is. Take it for granted and enjoy. |
