Review : "Authorized Bootleg" is an archival release from the identically named series on Mercury/Island Def Jam, featuring an outdoor concert by Robert Cray from Austin, Texas, recorded on May 25, 1987. The recording was originally made by Bob Meyrowitz for the radio program King Biscuit Flower Hour and comes from the concert archive of Wolfgang's Vault. Cray is here at the peak of his commercial success, shortly after the release of the album "Strong Persuader" (1986), and is backed by Richard Cousins (bass), Peter Boe (keyboards) and David Olson (drums). The concert offers a solid cross-section of his repertoire at the time, including "Smoking Gun," "Right Next Door (Because Of Me)," and "Phone Booth," complemented by an extended, nearly seven-minute-long version of the Jimmy Smith classic "Back At The Chicken Shack."
