Review : Paul Simon in Israel at the Culture Palace in Tel Aviv. Paul is accompanied by the Belgian jazz-musician Toots Thielemans. The Jesse Dixon Singers also joined Paul in Israel - they add that gospel feel that many of his 70's songs had to them. Most of the 2 cd show is soundboard quality. The location and date on the artwork of the bootleg is not correct, see note below.

Note (Yoav Kutner) : What a strange passage. In 1978, I broadcast a performance by Paul Simon from the Heichal Hatarbut in Tel Aviv. I was then 24 years old and this was the first show I broadcast on the radio (together with Eli Israeli) so I remembered it with great excitement. In the GLC film, the recording of the show bearing the date 5.7.1978 was kept. On the same occasion, I also interviewed Paul Simon, and the recording of that program was also archived on July 14, 1978. And why am I telling all this ? Because a few years ago, when rumors spread about the possibility of Simon and Garfunkel coming to Israel, I searched the Internet for photos from that old show, and came across a bootleg recording of the show I aired, but with a different date and place: Caesarea, May 1978. I suddenly remembered a picture from Caesarea. (His harmonica player), playing together. Did I have a dream? I asked myself ... Did I remember the place where Simon performed from the Heichal Hatarbut to Caesarea? Today, ahead of the current visit, the person in charge of digitization at the GLC, Shmulik Lederman, broadcast an excerpt from that historic show, in which an Israeli and I inform the audience that "we are live from the Hall of Culture" ... how can that be? In Caesarea ... Confused by the illusions of memory, I called the help of Or Barnea, YNET 's cultural figure . He dug in the digital archive of Yedioth Ahronoth and came up with a surprising finding: in 1978, Paul Simon appeared in Israel 4 times (!!!). Two performances took place in Caesarea, on 3.7 and 6.7 One performance at the Nation Buildings in Jerusalem on 4.7 And another performance at the Hall of Culture on 5.7 Probably two more shows were expected to be canceled, but there were four shows !!! And how does no one remember that ??? Not even Amalia Argaman, the mother of Or Barnea, who was the journalist who wrote about Paul Simon at the time. And how did the 7.5 date pop up online? The answer to this, apparently, lies in the fact that the United States reads 5.7 on May 7 ... So someone there found on the net the recording of the show at the GLC and connected it with a photo from Caesarea and a date that was not there . So special thanks to Or Barnea for correcting the memory And here, once again, excerpts from that performance ... Heichal Hatarbut in Tel Aviv, July 1978.
