Review (Austin Chronicle) : "Some people have, some people have not," belts out Kent "Omar" Dykes' gravelly baritone on the title tune of his reissued 1987 call of the wild, Hard Times in the Land of Plenty. That's a disconcertingly apropos image for these times and the first of a solid one-two recording punch, followed by 1988's Wall of Pride. Nearly 15 years later, both albums stand as tall and strong, maybe stronger for having weathered the Nineties. Omar & the Howlers' John Fogerty-meets-Double Trouble sound was popular enough in Austin to win the band a slew of local music awards and garner them much airplay on radio, but that description is a revisionist convenience: Dykes' swamp-drenched baritone and muddy bottom blues predated Double Trouble and possibly the Fabulous Thunderbirds. The title track to Hard Times, its monster single "Border Girl," and punchy, straight-from-the-sticks romps like "Dancing in the Canebrake" lead a trail right into the heart of Delta rhythm & blues. Likewise, Wall of Pride offers a watertight ride through the backwoods, picking up Omar's Mississippi-born influences and seating them smack in the middle of his big Texas-in-the-jungle blues ("Rattlesnake Shake," "Dimestore Hoo Doo," "Meet Me Down at the River"). The newly remastered reissues also stand as a superior testament to the world-class recordings made here in the late Eighties and proof that Austin blues never did begin or end with the name "Vaughan."

Review (MusicMeter) : Prima plaat van Omar and the Howlers ,de uit Austin,Texas afkomstige Blues(rock) formatie rondom zanger/gitarist Omar Dykes ,die zelf zijn roots heeft in McComb, Mississippi.Vind Wall of Pride uit 1988 net een fractie minder dan voorganger Hard Times in the Land of Plenty van een jaar eerder,want die bevat toch net wat beter songmateriaal. Maar deze is mede door enkele uitstekende covers ook meer dan de moeite waard.Zowel Jimmy Reed's Down in Mississippi als We Gotta Get Out of This Place van the Animals krijgen hier voortreffelijke bewerking.De eerste is een Swamp blues uitvoering,met een prachtig jaren dertig Blues intro waar Omar ook vocaal nog alles uit de kast trekt.Heeft sowieso zowel een krachtige als indrukwekkende stem die wat betreft stijl/geluid ergens tussen Howlin' Wolf en John Fogerty inzit.En het 'Howling at the moon' beheerst hij ook als geen ander.Met dezelfde wapens,zijn vocalen en zeer ontspannende gitaarspel weet hij ook de tweede cover naar zich toe te trekken. En aangezien eigen songs als Rattlesnake Shake,Bad Seed,Dimestore Hoo Doo en het titelnummer,om er maar een paar te noemen,ook heerlijk weg luisteren is Wall of pride gewoon een hele fijne plaat geworden die ergens tussen goed en heel goed inhangt. Maar het allerbest was Omar and the Howlers natuurlijk live.Ik heb ze in de periode 85-95 een aantal keren mogen aanschouwen en dat was niet alleen muzikaal maar ook visueel een feest.Het unieke gitaarspel van Omar Dykes,het kruislings aanslaan,buigen van de gitaar en allerlei andere capriolen die hij met zijn groene Fender uithaalde waren een genot om te zien. Jammer genoeg treed hij door zijn ziekte sinds een paar jaar niet meer op,de goede man is inmiddels ook de zeventig gepasseerd maar toen ik onlangs via You tube nog eens een live optreden terugkeek kwamen de mooie herinneringen weer zeer levendig terug........
