Review (AllMusic) : In 2021 recenseerde ik “Out of Control”, het debuutalbum van Marco Mattei. In mijn ogen had de in de Verenigde Staten woonachtige Italiaan een interessante plaat gemaakt, maar was het als geheel nog niet consistent genoeg. In de muziek van Mattei is met name de invloed van Peter Gabriel hoorbaar. Voor dit nieuwe album maakt Mattei gebruik van Jerry Marotta (drums) en Tony Levin (basgitaar), waardoor dit alleen maar wordt versterkt. Sowieso maakt Mattei gebruik van een keur aan muzikanten. Een hoofdrol is er voor Duilio Galioto die een groot arsenaal aan toetsen bespeelt. Verder is Trey Gunn van King Crimson te horen. En maakt Mattei gebruik van verschillende vocalisten zodat hij de verschillende emoties kan uitdiepen en inkleuren. Uiteraard zingt Mattei ook zelf. “Age of Fragility” is een introspectief en wat donker album. Volgens Mattei ook een conceptalbum dat zware thema’s als isolatie, onverschilligheid, emotionele afhankelijkheid, kwetsbare relaties en depressie behandelt. Zijn tweede cd begint met het fraaie Just Tired. De Gabriel-invloeden liggen er dik bovenop, dat klopt. Maar het is een sterke song. Na het wat gewone You Don’t Deserve It, valt Human Again op. Dit is een door Malena Ramonet gezongen rustig nummer waarbij op de achtergrond veel gebeurt. Het is heel sfeervol, bijna Twin Peak-achtig. Ik vind Wrong ook een mooi nummer. Een wat klagende en emotievolle song, een prog smartlap en ik bedoel dat positief. Insomnia is een beklemmend nummer met gesproken woord over soundscapes. Ik begrijp dat Mattei dit zo doet vanwege het thema, maar het nummer spreekt mij niet aan. Ik heb dan liever het fijne A Trick of the Mind. Een zachtaardig en relaxt liedje met een folk feel dat zich ook in je hoofd nestelt. Na het wat kabbelende Watermark in my Heart denk ik dat het album wel wat pit kan gebruiken. Dat komt er niet, al zijn So Fragile (doet wat denken aan Riversea) en End of the Line (rustig, introspectief en sfeervol) fraaie songs. Met een lange versie van Just Tired komt er een einde aan dit album. In mijn ogen is “Age of Fragility” een album waarop Marco Mattei zich bevestigt. Er staan veel mooie songs op. En gezien het thema is het (gelukkig) niet topzwaar geworden. Wat ik wel vind: veel nummers zijn in ongeveer hetzelfde tempo. Een dosis peper op z’n tijd zou het album ten goede zijn gekomen. Dit gezegd hebbende, ik luister met veel plezier naar dit album van dit gevoelsmens. Liefhebbers van gevoelige en intelligente progressieve pop zullen genieten van “Age of Fragility”. Mooi album weer Marco, ik ben heel benieuwd naar je volgende.

Marco recorded the album in Dreamland Recording Studios in Woodstock, NY with Duilio Galioto (keys) and the classic Peter Gabriel rhythm section featuring drummer Jerry Marotta and bassist Tony Levin. Guest appearances on the album include Tony's former King Crimson bandmate Trey Gunn and spoken word from Jennifer Maidman (David Sylvian, Boy George). At its core, Age of Fragility is a concept album that examines themes of isolation, indifference, emotional dependency, fragile relationships, self sabotage, and depression. Through evocative storytelling and poignant lyricism, Mattei paints a vivid portrait of the complexities of the human experience, making this album a deeply introspective and thought provoking journey. This album is dedicated to all people struggling to fit in today’s society. Review (Marco Mattei) : Italian guitarist/songwriter Marco Mattei releases his first second album, entitled “Age of Fragility” on 7D Media/Third Star Records on May 16, 2025. Marco Mattei, born and raised in Civitavecchia, Italy, has been deeply passionate about music from an early age. As a teenager, he studied jazz guitar with Max Rosati while developing a strong affinity for the creative complexity of progressive rock. He joined the local prog band De Blaise, contributing to their EP By Common Consent and performing live for several years. He also co-founded The Snowdogs, a tribute band dedicated to Rush. Alongside his musical pursuits, Marco earned a Master’s degree in Electronics and an MBA, while also diving into sound engineering and music production, attending advanced audio programs to refine his craft. In 2021, he released his debut solo album, Out of Control—a rich, multi-layered collection of emotionally intense songs featuring globally acclaimed musicians such as Tony Levin (King Crimson, Peter Gabriel), Jerry Marotta (Peter Gabriel, Hall & Oates), Pat Mastelotto (King Crimson, XTC), Chad Wackerman (Frank Zappa, Allan Holdsworth), and many more. The album blended various musical styles, unified by a distinctive sonic identity that combined electric and acoustic guitars with guitar loops, bouzouki, and resonator guitars. The soundscape was further enriched by ethnic and acoustic instruments such as Irish whistle, flute, fiddle, mandolin, pedal steel guitar, sitar, and tambura, creating a globally resonant musical experience. Unlike its predecessor, which was recorded remotely across multiple locations, this album was recorded live in-studio with a core band featuring Jerry Marotta, Tony Levin, and Duilio Galioto, resulting in a more organic and cohesive sound. The album, further enriched by contributions from musicians worldwide—including Trey Gunn on Warr guitar—features strings, mandolin, cavaquinho, and harp, creating a deeply immersive listening experience. Musically, Age of Fragility presents a more focused and coherent style, while still pushing boundaries by fusing electric and acoustic guitars with intricate loops and the distinctive sounds of the bouzouki. The compositions strike a delicate balance between simplicity and complexity, offering an intimate yet expansive sonic journey. Lyrically, the album delves into themes of isolation, emotional dependency, fragile relationships, self-sabotage, and depression, using evocative storytelling to capture the complexities of the human experience.
