Review for Border Affair (AllMusic) : Undeserving of his relative obscurity, Lee Clayton belongs in the company of Waylon Jennings and other elite outlaw country-rockers. His defiance and independence are plain when he sings "Tequila Is Addictive," but he doesn't seem to give a damn, sticking to his own fiercely personal material. The album was cut in Nashville, but hot lead guitar/Memphis Horns mainstays Andrew Love and Wayne Jackson separate this from the establishment by a country mile. Sincerity makes up for any deficiencies in singing range.
Review for Naked Child (AllMusic) : Neil Wilburn, who also produced the excellent Border Affair the year before, casts the intensely personal outlaw manifestos on this third album much more in rock than country. By simultaneously mixing down Clayton's admittedly limited voice, the producer loses more than he gains in spite of assistance from Carlene Carter, Tracy Nelson and J.J. Cale.
