Review : One of the best-sounding John Prine recodings there is, this show might be one of the most star-studded John Prine shows ever. Margo Price, Bon Iver's Justin Vernon, My Morning Jacket's Yim Yames and The Night Sweats's Nathaniel Rateliff each guested on one song, and (ex) Pink Floyd's Roger Waters even brought his back vocalists from indie band Lucius for the song "Hello in There". You can find tons of reviews of this concert online, as well as fan-shot videos on YouTube. John Prine inspired and influenced a lot of today's best songwriters and this show proves that. As someone puts, "John Prine might not be your favorite songwriter, but he probably is one of your favorite songwriters' favorite songwriter." All guest artists featured on this show paid tribute to John when he passed away - Margo Price and Nathaniel Rateliff performed on NPR's Tiny Desk John Prine Tribute Concert, Jim James posted a John Prine cover on Instagram, Roger Waters recorded a video sharing his thoughts, and Justin Vernon wrote on his Twitter: "A simple majority of who I am as a person, let alone a musician, is because of John Prine. He is my number 1."

Concert review (mxdwn.com) : Ending the night at Fort Stage, John Prine's country western repertoire was a lesson in the importance of cadence if not diction. Appearing for his fifth Newport Folk Festival, Prine offered a loping "Long Monday," and continued the movement with "Taking a Walk." His headlining set featured a marquee of big-name performers, some having already been featured on other Newport stages, like My Morning Jacket's Jim James and Harbor Stage's unannounced act, Nathaniel Rateliff. Also among the collaborations were Justin Vernon of Bon Iver, Nashville's Margo Price, and a duet with Roger Waters, his 1971 hit, "Hello in There". The set got shamelessly and angrily political with, "Your Flag Decal Won't Get You into Heaven Anymore," and closed with a crowded stage full of performers chorusing on, "Paradise."

Concert review (Jam Base) : Prine and his band opened with "Love Love Love" and few songs later, following a rendition of "Your Flag Decal Won't Get You Into Heaven Anymore," Bon Iver frontman Justin Vernon took the stage at Fort Adams State Park. Vernon had led a tribute to Prine at the former's Eaux Claires festival last month, and yesterday he again shared the stage with his musical hero, this time covering "Bruised Orange (Chain Of Sorrow)." A couple of songs later Prine welcomed My Morning Jacket frontman Jim James to duet on "All The Best." Both MMJ and Vernon covered the same songs respectively on the Broken Hearts & Dirty Windows tribute album. Another duet came from the next guest, country singer-songwriter Margo Price, who sang on "In Spite Of Ourselves." Prine played "That's the Way That the World Goes 'Round" before bringing out Nathaniel Rateliff to help out on "Sam Stone." The biggest surprise guest was saved for last as Waters, accompanied by vocalists Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig of Lucius, came onstage for a performance of "Hello In There." Waters had debuted a cover of the Prine classic at his Newport Folk Fest appearance in 2015 while backed by MMJ and Wolfe and Laessig. The set ended with Prine leading on "Lake Marie" and everyone joining in on his beloved "Paradise."
