Review (AllMusic) : Although co-founded by John Grant and Chris Pearson, the Czars were always Grant's band, with most of the group's acclaim stemming from his deep, resonant vocals and songwriting. The frontman reportedly butted heads with his four bandmates, but such creative tension helped mold the Czars into an eclectic group, and Grant's voice - despite being the cornerstone of every Czars album - wouldn't have shined as brightly without the dreamy, shoegazing music that flanked it. Queen of Denmark, his first release without the Czars, lacks that creative tension. Although recorded with Midlake (the band even shares billing in the album's title), it feels more like a solo release, lacking both the cohesion of a proper lineup and the checks-and-balances system that Grant's former bandmates provided. Left to his own devices, he unknowingly dilutes his strengths, whether he's trading poetry for campy lyrics ("I wish I had the brain of a Tyrannosaurus Rex so I wouldn't have to deal with all this crap") or aiming for a contemporary version of '70s soft rock and coming up with mundane Americana instead. There's no hiding the fact that Grant is a seriously talented vocalist, and the album's best moments occur whenever he tones down the camp and, with a mix of Eddie Vedder's baritone and Tim Buckley's vibrato, reaches for the heartstrings instead. But with song titles like "Sigourney Weaver" and "Jesus Hates Faggots," Queen of Denmark is more concerned with Grant's cynicism.

Review (Humo) : John Grant was de zanger en bezieler van het tegendraadse countrypopgroepje The Czars uit Colorado, dat in zijn korte bestaan meer lovende woorden dan kopers verzamelde. In 2004 verhuisde hij naar New York, stelde zich als hulpje ten dienste van vrienden als The Flaming Lips en Midlake , en met die laatsten heeft hij nu zijn solodebuut opgenomen: 'Queen of Denmark' . Wie 'Queen of Denmark' een grondige luisterbeurt geeft, beseft dat de kans behoorlijk klein is dat Grant ook solo snel in de vergeethoek belandt: ondanks de hordes blazers, strijkers en koortjes is het een van toppop doordrongen plaat. Zijn stem bevindt zich ergens tussen die van Rufus Wainwright en Stephin Merritt van The Magnetic Fields , met een heel klein beetje Beck . Dat hij geen vrolijke frans is geeft zijn teksten bovendien een diepgang die de meeste pop ontbeert. 'Marz' blijkt genoemd naar de snoepwinkel in zijn vroegere hometown Denver, waar de kleine John urenlang voor de toonbank stond te kijken naar de zelfgemaakte zuurtjes en zoetjes - nostalgie troef. Ook 'Where Dreams Go to Die' is uitermate inzetbaar als soundtrack bij het snikken. Met 'Sigourney Weaver' , song vier, krijgen we de pop waarover we het al hadden. Helemaal top voelt Grant zich nog steeds niet - anders zong hij niet 'I feel just like Sigourney Weaver' (ter info: in 'Aliens') - maar de sfeer is opmerkelijk vrolijker, alsof hij wil zeggen: 't is allemaal maar film. 'Chicken Bones' is een potentiële hit - denk, niet enkel wegens de titel, aan Little Feat nadat ze hun Stones -obsessie hadden afgeschud en in de New Orleans-ritmes doken - net als 'Silver Platter Club' , dat een Ringo -compositie van The Beatles had kunnen zijn ('I wish that confidence was all you could see in my eyes / Like those interviews in locker rooms with talented sports guys'). Meer hits: 'Outer Space' en 'Caramel' , dat zó Jeff Buckley is dat wij op zoek zijn gegaan naar die ene in de mazen van ons geheugen verdwenen Buckley-compositie. Niks gevonden. 'Queen of Denmark' is een bij momenten misschien net iets te gepolijste popplaat die desondanks uw aandacht meer dan verdient. Op Wikipedia is John Grant pas de vierentwintigste John Grant in rang.
