Review (Written In Music) : Wellicht had je voordien nog nooit van Heather Little gehoord. De zangeres groeide op in Texas in Austin en Dallas, tijdens de beginjaren van het millennium perfectioneert ze in relatieve stilte haar songwriters skills, die worden in countrykringen ten zeerste geapprecieerd. Heathers songwerk is ondertussen geadopteerd door oner andere Travis Meadows en Sunny Sweeney, Miranda Libert nam Me and Charlie Talkin’ op en deelde eveneens de schrijftafel met Heather voor Gunpowder & Lead. Het dramatisch verhaal over een getergde vrouw die ten einde raad het heft in eigen handen neemt klinkt indringender dan ooit op treurige cellotonen en vocale backing door Van Plating en sluit By Now af. De basistracks werden in Capitola, Californië onder hoede van Brian Brinkerhof opgenomen en aangevuld met geïnspireerde instrumentatie van een indrukwekkende, uitsluitend door klassenbakken bevolkte, gastenlijst met Audley Freed, Duke Levine, Kevin Barry en Jared Tyler die samen met John Jackson het akoestische en elektrisch versterkte snarenwerk aanleveren, Russ Pahl legt accenten met pedalsteel terwijl Joe Newberry het, al even in het genre gebruikelijke, banjogetokkel brengt, orgel en pianowerk zijn van John Deaderick afkomstig. Five Deer Country, een meeslepend countryduet met Rusty Van Sickle F blijkt meteen een sterke opener, de combinatie van banjo, accordeon en zacht snerpende slide creëert de perfecte background bij dit verhaal dat zich op Texaanse grond afspeelt. “They don’t make a ring for hands like mine”, zucht Heather, een doodeerlijke openbaring van een misgelopen huwelijk. Het is de hoge stem van Patty Griffin die de smartelijke, gebroken zang flankeert. In het al even mistroostige This Life Withou You horen we weerom de stem van La Griffin. My Fathers Roof is een indringende evocatie over misbruik in familiale kring en ademt een haast ondraaglijke wanhoop uit, een gedempt trompetje versterkt dat gevoel van schrijnende hulpeloosheid.”There ain’t no refuge, comfort, or shelter under my fathers roof”. Landfall, biedt nauwelijks enige troost, die weergaloos mooie pianoballade met droevige cellotonen is ongetwijfeld één van de vele hoogtepunten. Transistor Radio, een in heimwee gedrenkte terugblik over een lang vervlogen periode, vormt een fraai tweespan met het weemoedige California Queen. Weliswaar vertrouwd klinkende muziek, de telkens vanuit een verassende invalshoek gebrachte verhalen in de meeslepende duetten of verstilde countryfok passages kunnen nauwelijks genegeerd worden. Heather Little is naast een uitmuntend songwriter een al even bevlogen zangeres. Better By Now herbergt een intrigerende collectie van uit het leven gegrepen muzikale snapshots en prijkt nu al in mijn persoonlijk eindejaarlijstje wat Americana betreft.

Review (De Krenten Uit De Pop) : De Texaanse singer-songwriter Heather Little schreef tot dusver vooral songs voor anderen, maar laat op haar album By Now horen dat ze deze songs zelf nog veel mooier en indringender kan vertolken By Now van de Amerikaanse singer-songwriter Heather Little is een wat bescheiden release binnen het aanbod van deze week, maar het is een album dat je genadeloos bij de strot grijpt. Heather Little maakt Amerikaanse rootsmuziek zonder opsmuk, maar heeft zich wel omringd met een aantal fantastische muzikanten die tekenen voor een puur en gloedvol geluid. Het past prachtig bij de mooie stem van de Amerikaanse muzikante, die met heel veel gevoel zingt. Dat kan ook haast niet anders, want de songs op By Now zijn getekend door zeer persoonlijke verhalen over pieken en dalen in het leven van Heather Little. Het levert een album op dat goed is voor flink wat kippenvel. Op Facebook verscheen deze week het volgende bericht van de Amerikaanse singer-songwriter Heather Little. “In less than 24 hours, the whole wide world will have unlimited access to my account of some of my deepest, most personally traumatic, and life shaping events, family dynamics, and personal tragedies. Much of the hard facts are just sad and embarrassing on paper, but the overwhelming love in the current chapter of my life is testament to the incredible friends and family, and chosen family in particular, who have afforded me the support it has taken to find the courage to share such things with the world outside the small rooms I’ve played for 20 years. I hope you’ll find something in it that assures you you’re not alone in your story, even if you aren’t ready to tell it”. Het ontroerende bericht werd vergezeld door een foto van Heather Little als dreumes op schoot bij haar vader, getekend door een forse wijnvlek in haar gezicht. Een dag later maakte ik kennis met de muziek van Heather Little, die met By Now een bijzonder indrukwekkend album heeft afgeleverd. De singer-songwriter uit Texas schrijft al heel wat jaren songs voor anderen, onder wie bijvoorbeeld Miranda Lambert, maar op By Now laat ze horen dat ze haar songs zelf nog veel mooier en indrukwekkender kan vertolken. By Now werd gemaakt met een aantal geweldige muzikanten, die in een Californische studio tekenden voor heel veel prachtig gitaarwerk en fraaie bijdragen van onder andere banjo, cello, viool, accordeon, piano en pedal steel. De songs van Heather Little bevinden zich op het snijvlak van folk en country en het zijn songs die wat traditioneel aan doen, overigens zonder gedateerd of oubollig te klinken. Door de variatie in de gebruikte instrumenten zijn het songs die verrassend veelzijdig klinken, maar de fraaie en sfeervolle instrumentatie staat in alle tracks volledig in dienst van de vocalen. Heather Little beschikt over een stem die gemaakt is voor de vaak behoorlijk melancholische folk- en countrysongs die ze maakt en ze vertolkt haar songs met hart en ziel. Er komt de nodige persoonlijke ellende voorbij op By Now en deze wordt bijna tastbaar gemaakt door de emotievolle zang van Heather Little. De prachtige stem van Heather Little voorziet de songs op haar album van een enorme impact, die bij mij song na song goed is voor kippenvel. Het is kippenvel dat alleen maar wordt versterkt door de zeer fraaie klanken op het album en als dan ook de karakteristieke stem van Patty Griffin opduikt op de achtergrond grijpt By Now van Heather Little je nog wat genadelozer bij de strot. De impact van de persoonlijke songs van de Texaanse singer-songwriter en haar hartverscheurend mooie zang zijn alleen maar toegenomen sinds mijn eerste kennismaking met de muziek van Heather Little, die in deze drukke releaseweken helaas moet concurreren met stapels andere nieuwe albums binnen de Amerikaanse rootsmuziek. Het zijn albums die stuk voor stuk worden verpletterd door de geweldige songs van Heather Little, die met By Now zomaar een van de meest indrukwekkende rootsalbums van het jaar heeft afgeleverd. Het is een album dat vooralsnog bescheiden aandacht krijgt, maar liefhebbers van Amerikaanse rootsmuziek die dit album laten liggen, missen een onbetwist en echt wonderschoon jaarlijstjesalbum.

Review (Americana Highways) : Heather Little’s new album By Now is stunning. It’s beautiful and chilling every word and step of the way, and there’s an incredible depth to the songwriting. For more validation, she is surrounded with folks that make this album also feel like a new super group of the real songwriters in this country is afoot – Patty Griffin, and songwriters who’ve written hits for the top tier. But the songwriting is incredible profound, and Heather’s vocals are as real as they come. “Five Deer County” is a complex story of living with someone and eyeing the steep pathway out. She was “strangling that boy with my apron strings…. choking that boy with my apron strings.” “I spend the night up rolling change… I could bring him back, but I’d rather give him back his name, and give him all he’s ever dreamed, a five deer county and an old air stream. And there’s more: “I’ve been the girl in the truck, I’ve been the wife on the farm … he’s the king of the hills….” The banjo and electric guitar tones here are to die for. Rusty Van Sickle A perfect Americana song. “Hands Like Mine” is absolutely beautiful and the addition of Patty Griffin harmonizing is utterly enchanting. A touch of accordion “I tried one on. It was a strange kind of heavy, sharp around the edges… those were my white knuckles on the wheel… it should have been a sign, they don’t make rings for hands like mine.” Another perfect, and now you’re waiting for the next one. Next up is “Razor Wire” featuring Leslie Satcher. Leslie has written songs for George Strait and Martina McBride. “When the sun fails, you light your lanterns, let ’em burn the whole night through… I’ll be looking for you too… I will spend my dying breath calling out your name.” “Better By Now” features Ronnie Bowman in the dark song about being in a relationship with little chance of escape: “your knife is dirty and your plans are cruel… I burned out the clutch in the Cavalier, drove all the way home in second gear.. liked to have killed myself tryin’ to disappear … I ought to be better by now, but I got mixed up with you somehow.” Chilling. Absolutely chilling. The album title comes from this one, so listen closely. (Ronnie Bowman for the record has written hits for Kenny Chesney and Brooks & Dunn.) In “Transistor Radio” we find lines like “Seventeen ain’t what is was when my granddad was a boy and he lied about his age so they’d let him fight the war, and then my brother took his turn and they just thanked him for his service and pumped him full of pills.” “I’m an analogue trespassing through their digital ages… I like needles on my gauges.” The right touches of pedal steel and baritone sounding guitar and brushes on the drums hit the sweet spot. “Saint Christopher” features harmonies by Crystal Bowersox and is a hazy, hot summer’s day observation of betrayals on “it’s all perfect in the dark… you can’t hide in the light… I tried to take a sinner for a saint.” “Gunpowder & Lead,” yes that song, was co-written by Heather and Miranda Lambert. Heather’s version is raw and a bit darker, and with low fiddle and an added verse that was written just hours too late to make it into Miranda’s recording. It’s fabulous. A must hear. Just like all the others. Who is this masked woman Heather Little, who co-wrote “Gunpowder & Lead” with Miranda Lambert and can now pick up the phone and have Patty Griffin and Van Plating recording on her songs plus other killer songwriters guesting left and right? Clearly there’s a lot more history here, and we’re all just patiently waiting for the backstory. Meanwhile, press play on what is guaranteed to be your favorite album of the year. Albums like this make me remember why I started covering music in the first place. The songwriting is every bit as fantastic as Lori McKenna’s, the stories are palpable and true; your heart will swell and your eyes will tear up all the way through. And for some reason Heather Little has been writing in obscurity in Texas? But this will surely change all that. Heather Little is bustin’ out.
