GORDON PAYNE : GORDON PAYNE |
|
Label : A&M Release Year : 1978 Review by Walton on RateYourMusic : I had never heard of Gordon Payne, until I found this album in a charity shop for 50p. Looked interesting and as J.J. Cale is listed as co-producer it had to worth a risk. What a find! This is a treasure. Nine great songs, superb playing, production and recording. The sound is close to audiophile standard. It has all the J.J. Cale style feel to the music but it has much more pep to it. Really swings along. Payne's voice is very good and delivers the lyrics with great feeling. Highly recommended. It seems that this was Payne's only album. Can't understand why this didn't sell in lorry loads. From what little there is on the net about him it seems that he has had a very successful career writing for others. Payne's songs have sold over 10,000,000 records and have earned three Gold Records. Artists to record his songs include; Reba McEntire, Rosanne Cash, The Statler Brothers, Linda Davis, Johnny Rodriguez, Joe Stampley and Moe Bandy, John Schneider, The Crickets, The Whites, Waylon Jennings, and others. His "Some Things Are Meant to Be", recorded by Linda Davis, reached number one. If you come across a copy then snap it up. |
