Review : Beyond The Palace captures Emmylou Harris and The Hot Band on February 20, 1983, live from Gilley's in Pasadena, Texas, in a set that was syndicated for radio by Westwood One. Recorded not long after her honky-tonk showcase Last Date, the show finds the band in a loose, dance-hall mood, and the sound is a clean, well-balanced radio broadcast. The set mixes country classics and left-field covers in the way Harris was known for: Creedence's "Bad Moon Rising" opens the night, "Born To Run" and "The Boxer" get the Hot Band treatment, and "Pancho & Lefty," "If I Needed You," "Tennessee Rose" and "Amarillo" show off her taste for the best of the Texas and Nashville songwriters. "How High The Moon" swings, "Luxury Liner" closes with a nod to her old mentor Gram Parsons, and the band introductions in the middle give a good picture of a tight, relaxed lineup with room for fiddle, pedal steel and piano solos. At just under 46 minutes with no filler, this is a compact and very enjoyable document of Harris at a high point of her early eighties touring. Line-Up : Emmylou Harris (vocals, acoustic guitar), Frank Reckard (lead guitar, mandolin, vocals), Barry Tashian (rhythm guitar, vocals), Steve Fishell (dobro, pedal steel guitar), Wayne Goodwin (fiddle, mandolin), Don Johnson (piano, vocals), Michael Bowden (bass), Don Heffington (drums)
