Review (AllMusic) : In 2024, Bristol-born singer-songwriter Elles Bailey released Beneath the Neon Glow. A bona fide hit, it topped the jazz/blues albums chart and landed at 12 on England's general album charts. Following such an achievement can be daunting, but Can't Take My Story Away attempts and succeeds at delivering a record that celebrates her strengths and pursues hip, rootsy directions. It was produced by Luke Potashnick, who plays guitar on the set; he hired a cast of studio aces for the sessions that include a horn section and a string quartet. Bailey co-wrote ten of its 11 songs, most with Potashnick. That said, the origins of some tracks date back a decade. The title track opener is a personal manifesto set in a breakup song drenched in soul and R&B, complete with a B-3, horns (played by saxophonist Iain Ballamy, his son, trumpeter Charlie Ballamy, trumpeter Neal Sugarman), and a stirring backing chorus. Bailey's trademark gritty vocal is in excellent empowerment form. It's followed by the funky soul single "Growing Roots," a love song with a spine-slipping backbeat and bassline, swelling B-3, chunky electric piano, Potashnick's guitars, and Ethan Johns' drums; horns punctuate the backdrop. "Better Days," (another single) is a swinging R&B anthem and the only tune not credited to Bailey. was written demo by Catfish singer Matt Long, who passed away in 2025. Bailey received it from his parents; her studio gang covered it in tribute with thundering kick drums and tom-toms, tight guitar licks, and a mountain of groove. "Blessed" slows things down. A gritty country-soul tune, it's framed by strings, gospelized backing voices, drums, and a skeletal bassline. "Take a Step Back" is a soul-drenched rocker with syncopated drums in a fast mambo backbeat, wailing B-3, and electric piano. Bailey and her backing singers deliver it as a celebration. "How Do You Do It" uses a fingerpopping NOLA R&B-style backbeat as Bailey engages in call and response with her chorus. "Angel" is a choogling blues-rocker with funky horns and a killer vocal by Bailey as she supports her subject: "Whenever you're lost to the darkness, I'll be your angel. We all have times when we get so afraid..." The album winds to its conclusion with the ballads "Dandelion," "Tightrope," and "Starling." The latter two directly engage gospel similar to the way, in an earlier era, Leon Russell employed it in "Stranger in a Strange Land." Can't Take My Story Away, Bailey's second album for Cooking Vinyl, is a very different recording than Beneath the Neon Glow in both content and production. It's kinetic and raw-hewn; it sounds live. The playing is inspired, woolly, and passionate enough to support the singer's powerful delivery. She soars to meet them, and digs every ounce of emotion from her lyrics, communicating directly, honestly, and powerfully to listeners. With its highly developed songwriting, excellent vocal performances, and rootsy production style that support and showcase both albums, Can't Take My Story Away is a career-defining album.

Review (Muziekwereld) : Elles Bailey is een Britse singer-songwriter en maakt daar al bijna tien jaar de muziekscene onveilig met haar blues- en rock getinte albums. Ze is erg productief met albums produceren, want er staat inmiddels binnen een relatief korte tijd een aardig oeuvre. Met Can’t Take My Story Away probeert ze nog meer luisteraars te bereiken en dat kan haar zomaar gaan lukken, want alles voor nog meer succes is aanwezig. Toen ik Can’t Take My Story Away een aantal weken geleden in mijn mailbox kreeg, herkende ik de naam van Elles Bailey niet meteen. Maar ik had beter moeten weten, want haar vorige album Beneath the Neon Glow (2024) heb ik wel degelijk gehoord en ik kan me nu weer herinneren dat ik dat album best goed vond. Dat betreffende album zette haar definitief op de muzikale kaart in de Britse muziekscene en ze won er diverse prestigieuze awards mee. Dat Elles Bailey een workaholic is, is niet alleen te merken aan de producties in de studio. Zo staat ze ieder jaar weer veel op het podium met haar band en dat is niet alleen in Groot-Brittannië. Binnenkort reist ze naar Florida om samen te spelen met Jason Isbell en zijn band en Drive-By Truckers. Naast haar eigen studiowerk en optredens vindt ze ook nog gewoon tijd om af en toe muziek te produceren voor andere artiesten. Wat aardig. Elles Bailey heeft voor Can’t Take My Story Away in de studio dingen net even wat anders gedaan dan ze normaal gewend is. Dit keer is de muziek niet verzorgd door haar eigen band, maar kreeg ze het voor elkaar om met ervaren sessiemuzikanten te werken. Meer succes betekent dus dat je het allemaal wat groter kan aanpakken. Het is te horen als je luistert naar de songs, want qua muzikale inkleuring klinkt het heel indrukwekkend en fraai. Van alles is dan ook te horen op Can’t Take My Story Away en Elles Bailey heeft zich samen met de sessiemuzikanten en producer Luke Benjamin Potaschnick niet ingehouden. Veel verschillende instrumenten zijn er gebruikt en het klinkt zoals een goede blues en Americana album hoort te klinken. En dan heb je ook nog eens de krachtige, ietwat rokerige stem van Elles Bailey om het helemaal compleet te maken. Niet heel lastig om te zien dat Elles Bailey met haar albums zoveel succes heeft in Groot-Brittannië. Ze is al een tijdje bezig, en produceerde al aardig wat albums, maar door haar jarenlange ervaring en het samenwerken met andere muzikanten levert ze met ieder nieuw album weer het maximale. Can’t Take My Story Away is voor liefhebbers van bluesmuziek, maar ook fanatiekelingen van het Americana genre kunnen dit album zonder problemen afspelen. Elles Bailey had ik nog niet echt op mijn muziekradar staan, maar ik ben nu helemaal bij de les.
