BOB DYLAN & THE GRATEFUL DEAD : MEN OF PEACE |
|
Label : Art Of Music Time : 77:38 Venue : JFK Stadium, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Recording Date : July 10, 1987 Quality : Audience Recording (A+) Review (Bob's Boots) : A nice package from Art of Music, complete with picture disc. Trepidation strikes as the music starts (as I have never completely listened to dylan and the Dead, the official release). Tangled up in blue starts with a little hesitation before building into the full arrangement. Dylan's voice is full and up front, although this was the start of the wear and tear starting to show through. And so sets the scene for the whole show. Dylan's singing changes from song to song, some fumbling with lyrics but overall this show works for me. The liner notes for Ballad Of Bob & Jerry say Dylan shouted out the lyrics... but I don't agree. The venom from the 74 tour isn't there, and the frenzy of the GE Smith era has yet to come. Great to hear Judas Priest, the reason for buying the CD, and Wicked Messenger. The Dead backing is full, and seems to fit - I don't know their albums so I cannot comment or compare. Overall the sound quality is fine and clear. Maybe I have adapted over the years, the changing voice, and styles... (or perhaps it's that I have seen Dylan when he was much worse) but this is one to listen to now and again.
