Review (Collectors Music Reviews) : Disobeyed His Orders is Bob Dylan's penultimate gig in a long and successful year. Thinman use an excellent and detailed stereo audience tape of the entire show with attractive dynamics and energy. This is remarkable considering the acoustical graveyard Cole Field House is at the University Of Maryland. Thinman has been documenting Dylan's late nineties live output and this is one of the best sounding tapes they have pressed of a very interesting concert. 1998 began with Dylan receiving three Grammy awards for Time Out Of Mind and is capped by several highly sucessful tours of the world. Despite the gloom of the album, Dylan sounds happy and upbeat, thanking the audience after almost every song. After the introduction the show begins with "Gotta Serve Somebody." Dylan performing his 1980 Grammy winning song gained momentum at the end of the year with one performance in August, two in September and fifteen in October and November. "I'll Remember You" is a nice revisit to Empire Burlesque and is followed by "Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again," a song that really hasn't undergone any dramatic rearrangements over the years. "Can't Wait" from the new album is probably as close to funk as Dylan ever gets. The three song acoustic set begins with a cover of the traditional "Stone Walls And Steel Bar" with the band singing in harmony on the chorus and is refered to by Dylan as a song from one of his favorite groups, the The Statler Brothers. "Mr. Tambourine Man" is upbeat and the audience react loudly to the "let me forget about today until tomorrow." The finale of the show is spectacular with "Blind Willie McTell" demonstrating the same power as the studio recording that was left off of Infidels, only to be issued a decade later in the bootleg series. "Every Grain Of Sand" is heartfelt and emotional, especially when he sings about "hanging in the balance of the perfect finished plan." The set ends with a fast and nasty version of "Highway 61 Revisited." The first big song to come off of the new album "Love Sick" begins the encore set, and "Blowin' In The Wind" and "Forever Young" are played acoustically. Disobeyed His Orders, packaged with great artwork on thick paper, is another solid Thinman title.
