Review : Barcelona 1989 documents Bob Dylan's stop at the Palau dels Esports on June 16, 1989, midway through the European leg of the Never Ending Tour and just months before the release of "Oh Mercy". The set draws heavily on the mid-sixties electric period, with "Absolutely Sweet Marie," "Just Like A Woman" and "Ballad Of A Thin Man" from "Blonde On Blonde" sitting alongside "Highway 61 Revisited" and a fiery "Like A Rolling Stone." Acoustic detours include a solo reading of the traditional ballad "Barbara Allen," "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall" and "Mr. Tambourine Man," while "Silvio," from the then-recent Down In The Groove, and a warm "Forever Young" round out a set that closes on the gospel-tinged "I Shall Be Released" before a raucous "Maggie's Farm." Dylan's road band of the period keeps the arrangements loose and unpredictable, reworking familiar melodies on the fly in a way that became a hallmark of this era of the tour. As an unofficial audience recording rather than a soundboard source, it captures the room as much as the stage, but the performance itself remains a favorite among collectors of Dylan's 1989 shows.
