DAVID LINDLEY : MR. DAVE |

Label : WEA Release Date : 1985 Length : 38:22 Review (AllMusic) : The magic recipe of Mr Dave (meaning David himself, not the album) was not anymore a surprise after his first two beautiful works, but should we judge the record in itself, it is a real gem, mainly on the first side. It is "pop" in the better sense of the word: nice melodies, choruses you want to sing along from the first time you hear them, laid back caribean rhythms, an overall sense of fun and relax and as usual a great guitar work. Opener "Pretty girl rules the world" is the perfect example of an irresistible hook while the production is a bit too stiff (as if something synthetic has fallen in the mix). "Truly do" is a nicecaribean-influenced ballad, with a great rhythm section contribution. "Look bad feel better" has something of an early Stones' riff. On "Hearts on fire" the rock-blues-slide-ace side of David comes out in full force, as "Walk to the sun" closes the first side with another dub-reggae rhythm that starts nearly like a religious hymn but soon opens up in a fresh and poppy chorus like you're on a Clapton's mid-70s album. Side two, which is generally weaker than the first one, starts with "Hands like a man", a perfect blues-rock playground to showcase Lindley's slide guitar work. "Follow your heart" is nothing more than a reggae-driven filler, while "Hurt so bad" is another Caribbean ballad in the fashion of "Truly do", but lacking a convincing chorus. "Alien invasion" is a pure tribute to Bob Marley (you can sing "Get up, stand up" over it), and "Starting all over again" closes the dances again with a reggae rhythm with a nice melody. |
