Concert Review : A phenomenal concert by David Gilmour in the European Capital of Culture. An audience of 20 000 gathered in the concert zone, and another several thousand saw the incredible show created by David Gilmour together with Leszek Mozdzer and Zbigniew Preisner, conducting a 30-piece NFM Wroclaw Philharmonic Orchestra from the streets and squares around Wolnosci Square. The audience had the opportunity to listen to songs featured on Gilmour's latest solo album, Rattle That Lock, but to the delight of all fans the artist also played several timeless hits from the Pink Floyd repertoire. From the early afternoon hours, Wroclaw began to fill with the fans of the British musician, arriving to the city from all over Poland, Germany and Czechia. The t-shirts with characteristic covers of Pink Floyd albums, flags, pins with Gilmour's portraits... but also yellow dresses, referring to "The Girl in the Yellow Dress" from the latest album - there were many signs showing the reason why the numerous fans of the legendary band and one of the best guitarists of all times came to Wroclaw that day. For one day, Wroclaw became not only the European Capital of Culture, but also a true world capital of cult and admiration of fans towards Pink Floyd and one of the pillars of this superband. In front of a characteristic round screen, known from both Gilmour's and Pink Floyd performances, the concert began from its special guest - a famous pianist and a true star of Polish jazz music, Leszek Mozdzer, who has collaborated with the British musician in the past. The over 30-minute performance by the Polish pianist was a true warm-up for the phenomenal 3-hour concert of the British musician, accompanied by the NFM Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Zbigniew Preisner. Apart from the pieces from his new solo album, Gilmour delighted the fans with a musical feast of the best known Pink Floyd hits, including "Wish You Were Here", "Money", "High Hopes", "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" as well as "Time" and "Comfortably Numb" for an encore. "I dreamed of leaving a musical mark on this exceptional place in the centre of Wroclaw. When David Gilmour expressed his willingness to play a concert in our city, Wolnosci Square was an ideal location for us. I would like to thank David very much for this magical performance", said Krzysztof Maj, director of the European Capital of Culture 2016 office right after the concert. The concert, its programme and atmosphere - combined together, it all allowed one of the most important and awaited musical events of this year in Poland to confirm the unique position of Wroclaw - ECoC 2016 - not only on the cultural, but also on concert map of Poland. The preparations for the concert in Wroclaw took several weeks. The construction of a stage, with its impressive weight of dozens of tonnes, the height of an 8-story building and 40-metre width lasted for an entire week, installation and fine tuning of the tonnes of sound systems started in the beginning of the last week, and the musician himself started rehearsing on Thursday - after all, Gilmour is known for his musical perfectionism. David Gilmour's concert, promoting his recent album, Rattle That Lock in Wroclaw was the first show of the international "Rattle That Lock World Tour 2016". The fourth solo album by David Gilmour has become a worldwide success. It topped the charts in 11 countries, including Poland and the United Kingdom, and reached the top 5 in additional 12 countries, including Germany. Concert Review (FabricationsHQ) : On a warm, balmy Saturday evening on the 25th of June at 9.45pm in Freedom Square, Wroclaw, David Gilmour and band arrived on stage. ? Outside of the intermission between sets they wouldn't leave until the fading echoes of final song 'Comfortably Numb' resonated across the square some three and a half hours later. David Gilmour last played in Poland ten years ago as part of his On an Island tour; couple that with the fact Pink Floyd never managed to play live in Poland and you could understand - and feel - the crowd's excitement build over the two hours and forty-five minutes of waiting for the man of the night to take to the stage. Gilmour, accompanied by his band, a 30 piece orchestra conducted by Zbigniew Preisner and special guest appearance from renowned Polish pianist and composer Leszek Mozdzer, had the crowd in the palm of his hand from the opening bars of '5am' to the explosive laser show that complemented aforementioned set closer 'Comfortably Numb.' The crowd were with the legendary Pink Floyd guitarist for every note of music and every pulse of the spectacular light show (designed by Mark Brickman) while a giant screen took centre stage, at times dominating both the show and the retinas of the audience (Gilmour and his band wore sun glasses during a pulsating light display that accompanied 'Run Like Hell'). There were a few changes to the set list from the Rattle That Lock tour concerts that had been played back in September 2015 and subsequent European and American dates - in came 'One of These Days' from Pink Floyd's album Meddle (last played live by Gilmour more than twenty years ago as part of Floyd's Division Bell tour in 1994) and, debuting from Rattle That Lock, 'Dancing Right in Front of Me.' The concert (filmed by Aubrey "Po" Powell, streamed live on line and half the show broadcast live by Polish TV in HD format) was the perfect mix of David Gilmour solo material and Pink Floyd classics; a smiling Gilmour knew by the appreciation he received from the crowd throughout the show and the reception given to him at the end of the night that he had pitched it absolutely right. David Gilmour's tour will continue across Europe where he will play a range of magnificent historic sites across numerous countries, including a return to Pompeii for two rumoured to be filmed nights, after a forty-five year gap (when Pink Floyd recorded and filmed the now classic, no audience performances that became Live at Pompeii in 1971). The final Rattle That Lock tour dates will be the prestigious five night run at the Royal Albert Hall in September. However Austral-Asian fans should keep their eyes and ears open as there are (currently unconfirmed) reports surfacing of possible Japanese and Australian tour dated in early 2017. |
