Review (Amazon) : I suspect that Chris de Burgh will never win any new fans these days - both he and his fan base have grown older together and rather like Cliff Richard if you love him, you love him.... That said I often feel Chris de Burgh is under estimated as a musician by many people. Admittedly he has produced his fair share of middle of the road smaltz but he is also a consumate craftsman when it comes songwriting. His great strength is in telling stories through song, creating vivid narratives with just a few brush strokes of lyrics, and generally with easy, instantly accessible (and memorable) melodies. This concert dvd lacks something and I can't quite put my finger on it. Maybe it's the curiously monochrome light show, (I had to check at one stage that the show wasn't in black and white!), or maybe it's simply that his days as a hell-raiser are over and any CdB concert nowadays is going to be a more sedate affair. Certainly the set list cherry picks right across his career and it's a strong selection, several songs benefitting from being dropped several tones, (Lady in Red in particular sounds less shrill at this pitch) and it's nice to see/hear some more unusual choices of songs. They are all performed with consumate skill if not showmanship by the band, and there's a guest slot for a guy from Supertramp who plays some decent sax. All in all it passes a pleasant couple of hours and if you like Chris de Burgh you're not going to be diappointed. If you are coming to him fresh however I'd recommend 'Live in Dublin' as a better introduction to the man and his music.
