Review (Written In Music) : Het bijna drie jaar geleden uitgebrachte naamloze debuut plaatste Bywater Call in de spotlights. Geheel terecht overigens, het vanuit Toronto opererende combo heeft met zangeres Megahn Parnell en gitarist Dave Barnes uitgesproken troeven in de hand die voluit uitgespeeld worden in een overrompelende blend van behoorlijk stevige rockende blues stevig afgekruid met southern blues en old school R&B elementen. Is het de gepassioneerde zang van Parnell , een oude blueszangers in een jong lijf, de urgente snaarinterventies van Barnes? Het leidt in combinatie met de ritmetandem en blazerssectie met Stephen Dyle en Julian Nalli naar een opwindende authentieke soulblues sound die je steeds minder aantreft bij het jonge volkje. Vergelijkingen blijven gevaarlijk maar Meghan’s stembuigingen komen opvallend dicht bij Maggie Bell die in de jaren zeventig na een creatief intermezzo bij Stone The Crows met Leslie Harvey op solowerk schitterde. Het is niet alleen de machtige strot die Remain overeind houdt. Het combo assembleert eigenhandig het songwerk dat tussen striemende rockblues van Falls Away en I left Behind naar de strakke funk van Sea We Swim pendelt. Met telkens een eersteplansrol voor de blazerssectie en orgelman die zich in het onderkoelde Ties That Bind evenmin onbetuigd laten. Als het even te druk en overdadig dreigt te worden biedt ‘balladewerk’ als Let Me Be Wrong, Fortune , een slepend Lover Down Slow en Locked even een uitweg maar zelfs in die relatief rustige passages overheerst een ongemeen broeierige en intense sfeer. Die wordt het best naar waarde geschat op een podium in een afgeladen festivaltent. Zoals die van (Ge)Varenwinkel komende zaterdag waar we met Bywater Call als headliner ongetwijfeld opwindende momenten zullen beleven.

Review (Bluestown Music) : De Canadese band Bywater Call is in Nederland al redelijk bekend aangezien de band al eens op het Moulin Blues festival optrad. De band debuteerde in 2019 en bestaat momenteel uit Meghan Parnell (zang), Dave Barnes (gitaar), Bruce McCarthy (drums), Mike Meuses (bas), Alan Zemaitis (keyboards), Stephen Dyte (trompet) en Julian Nalli (tenor saxofoon). Hun nieuwe album, ‘Remain’, staat vol met zeer soulvolle muziek met vaak een bluesy ondertoon. Zangeres Meghan Parnell trekt de nodige aandacht door haar zeer soulvolle rauwe stemgeluid, dat mij aan Bonnie Bramlett (Delaney & Bonnie) deed denken. Zij is in topvorm te horen in de zacht groovende opener Falls Away. Een prima swingende binnenkomer waarin ook de gemeen schurende slidegitaar van Dave Barnes opvalt. Lover Down Slow is daarna een intieme soulballad. Zacht deinend met krachtige blazers, een breekbare slidegitaar en de bluesy zang van Meghan. Ook Remain is een soulballad van het zeer intieme soort met zeer doorleefde zang. Let Me Be Wrong gaat op een warm deinende wijze richting het warme soulgeluid van het fameuze Hi label. Meghan is ook hier in topvorm en de blazers klinken lekker romig. Left Behind is vervolgens een groovend nummer met een bluesy ondertoon en een majestueus geluid dat aan Joe Cocker’s With A Little Help From My friends doet denken. De branderige slidegitaar van Dave Barnes is in volle glorie te horen in de broeierige funk van Sea We Swim naast het pompende soulorgel van Alan Zemaitis. De hoogtepunten van dit album zijn voor mij de bijtende groover Go Alone met een broeierig huilende slidegitaar en de zeer indringende, stemmige ballad Locked met een warm galmend geluid. Het album wordt feestelijk afgesloten met de soulpomper Bring It Back. Het nieuwe album van Bywater Call bewijst dat deze Canadese band tot de top van het soulblues genre behoort.

Review (Blues Blast Magazine) : Based in Toronto, Canada, Bywater Call is a seven piece band axed round the vocals of Meghan Parnell, supported by Dave Barnes on guitar, Alan Zemaitis on keys, the rhythm section of drummer Bruce McCarthy and bassist Mike Meusel and horns from Stephen Dyte (trumpet/valve trombone) and Julian Nalli (saxophones); B/V’s are by Tafari Anthony and Stacie Tabb, percussion by Mario Allende, producer Renan Yildizdogan plays mellotron on one cut, engineer Ross Hayes Citrullo bowed guitar on one. This is their second album release and all the material is credited to the band, with Tom Juhas contributing to two songs. “Falls Away” is a piece of Southern Rock based round a core guitar riff over which Meghan sings forcefully, the central solo played on slide, the horns remaining in the background on this opener. The horns play a larger part on “Lover Down Slow”, Dave’s slide work and Meghan’s vocals also well featured before the title track “Remain”, another slower-paced tune with a gospel sound to the chorus and defiant vocals from Meghan. “Let Me Be Wrong” completes a trio of quieter tunes with the melodic sound enhanced by the addition of mellotron to the chorus. Meghan does not wish to get “Left Behind” as piano, horns and slide feature, another tune with a rousing chorus before the band gets funky on “Sea We Swim”, keyboard man Alan featuring on organ. “Ties That Bind” chugs along, Meghan well supported by the backing vocalists to provide another stirring, horn-heavy chorus. The pace slows for “Fortune”, Meghan singing passionately about not being able to “hide in another man’s fortune, you can’t find the love that will bring you home”; “Go Alone” is another anthemic tune with a full band sound as the horns stand out behind Meghan’s vocals, the second half of the tune dominated by a moody slide breakdown. Meghan is stuck waiting on a lover’s call in “Locked”, the opening section of organ accompaniment gradually building in intensity as the song progresses, fine vocals with plenty of soul. The final track is “Bring It Back”, a real stomper with insistent drums from the start and a great, uptempo performance all round to close out this impressive album. Perhaps it’s the full band sound with horns, perhaps the slide and powerful female vocals, but, for this reviewer, there is a Tedeschi Trucks feel to Bywater Call’s music on this album. Meghan’s voice at times has a similar timbre to Susan Tedeschi’s; she has fewer changes of style and approach than Susan, though those may come as she develops her considerable talents. Elements of rock, soul and blues combine to good effect on this disc, meaning that there is plenty to enjoy here and I suspect that the band would be terrific live.
