Review (Kieran's Thoughts) : In the week leading up to this first Archive Series release of 2020, I was given the opportunity, and an exciting one at that, by Backstreets Magazine to review the second night in St. Paul from 2012. In writing that review, it left me uncertain what to do in relation to a write-up on this blog. I didn’t see the need to do a comprehensive write-up of the entire show this time around, but I also disliked the idea of ignoring this show completely given there are reviews of every other Archive Series release on here to read. So in the end I settled on this, a couple of additional thoughts after listening to the show a couple of times, alongside my rating and song recommendations. This is a really fun show – one that makes you want more from the Wrecking Ball World Tour – and the stand out performances are going to be surefire Archive essentials. “Stolen Car” and “Devils & Dust” shone on paper and in audience recordings, and the official mix from John Altschiller does them a lot of justice. Typically for Springsteen’s Archive Series, though, when we listen to this release we notice that a lot of songs we mightn’t expect to stand out strike us in the best way. “We Take Care of Our Own” and the following Wrecking Ball regulars are superb, and the same can be said for the rocking trio following “Devils & Dust”: “Youngstown,” “Murder Incorporated” and “She’s the One”. “Youngstown” in particular is brilliant, and I felt inclined to write this mini-review based on Bruce’s vocal from 3:55 to 4:05 alone. In a show inspired by Clarence, this is unsurprisingly a strong one on Jake’s part. Of course, the famous solo in “Jungleland” is the chef’s kiss, but don’t sleep on his efforts in an especially good rendition of “Loose Ends”. He plays with a lot of freedom in this fan favourite, and it’s an extra example of his confidence as a member of the E Street Band, only eight months in.
