Review (AllMusic) : Recorded at a 2004 stint at San Francisco's Great American Music Hall, Boz Scaggs leads a talented nine-piece unit through the rather eclectic highlights of his three-decade career. Recorded specifically for DVD (the accompanying CD - available separately - seems like an afterthought), the band looks and sounds tight with Scaggs in typically fine form. Although not the most exciting performer, he holds center stage well as his sharp backing group sticks with him through sumptuous but lovely ballads and the rootsier R&B that also informs Scaggs' sound. In fact, the last half-hour of the show is dominated by 11 minutes of the horn jump blues of "Runnin' Blue" and a quarter-hour workout on "Loan Me a Dime." It makes for a seamless, slick but consistently enjoyable show, nicely modulated between ballads such as "Harbor Lights" (which is also here in a stripped-down jazz quintet version - recorded at a different show with different musicians - as the disc's only extra track) and the funkier soft rock of "Jojo" and of course "Lowdown." The latter song - arguably his most recognizable tune - oddly kicks off the performance instead of closing it. "I Just Go" from the underheard 2001 Dig album is included but certainly a few fan favorites are missing, replaced by a cover of Bobby "Blue" Bland's "Ask Me 'Bout Nothing but the Blues," not exactly one of Scaggs' biggest smashes. Yet everything here is delivered with enthusiasm and a genuine joy of playing, as opposed to merely slogging through the hits one more time for posterity. The seven-camera, high definition shoot captures all the action in an appropriately professional matter, with all the soloists and backing signers getting equal screen time. The 5.1 surround mix is beautifully rendered too, creating a live but intimate feel. It adds up to this DVD being a terrific and sophisticated career capsule from a pop/soul/blues performer always defined by his class and style.

Review (Muziekwereld) : Een jaar of anderhalf geleden was Boz te gast bij Jools Holland en maakte een sombere en sobere, ja bijna, uitgebluste indruk en met enige terughoudendheid werd deze dvd dan ook in de lade van mijn Denon geschoven. Wég vrees! 'Blue-eyed soul in optima forma, en een loopbaanbestrijkende dwarsdoorsnede. Genoeg hits en kaskrakende albums om een Greatest Hits uit te brengen heeft Boz Scaggs eigenlijk niet. Materiaal voor een boeiend carrièreoverzicht is er in overvloed. Zo moeten we Greatest Hits Live dan ook zien. Alleen het album Silk Degrees dat Scaggs in 1976 maakte bezorgde hem furore, faam en een aantal hits, en is nog steeds één van de fraaiste platen uit het Blue Eyed Soul-genre. William Royce 'Boz' Scaggs toerde als begin-20er al door Europa, speelde in de originele bezetting van de band van zijn jeugdvriend Steve Miller, maakte in 1969 een prachtige soulplaat en behaalde zijn successen dus in de mid-70s. Daarna vond de immer strak in 't pak zittende en wars van trends zijnde zanger het een decennium lang welletjes. Hij runde zijn restaurant en vertoonde zich niet meer in de spotlights. Een paar jaar geleden schraapte hij toch weer zijn gedistingeerde en warme soulstem, tekende een platencontract en leverde in 2003 But Beautiful af. Greatest Hits Live is de weerslag van een concert in The Great American Music Hall in San Francisco, eind augustus 2004. Scaggs weet dat hij een mooi assortiment oude en nieuwe songs kan opdiepen. Hij is goedgeluimd, heeft een prima 8-koppige band bij en een gretig publiek voor zich, en brengt zijn mengeling van gesofisticeerde ballads, blues, jazz en soul met verve en klasse. Door middel van Lowdown, Harbor Lights, Georgia, Lido Shuffle en We're All Alone krijgt Silk Degrees de welverdiende aandacht, maar zijn werkelijk grootste hit What Can I Say blijft achterwege. Wellicht heeft die eigengereidheid van Scaggs ook nooit een wereldster gemaakt. De potentie is op deze 'introductie met terugwerkende kracht' in ieder geval overtuigend vastgelegd.
