10,000 MANIACS : MTV UNPLUGGED |
|
Label : Elektra Venue : Sony Music Studios, New York City, New York, USA Recording Date : April 21, 1993 Release Date : October 26, 1993 Length : 60:03 Review (AllMusic) : When it was recorded, nobody knew that MTV Unplugged would be 10,000 Maniacs' last album with Natalie Merchant. As it stands, it's a quiet, gentle way for her to bow out, offering no new revelations but several solid versions of the group's signature songs (mainly concentrating on Our Time in Eden) and a cover of Patti Smith's "Because the Night." It's nothing new, but for fans it's a graceful way to say goodbye. Review (Wikipedia) : MTV Unplugged is a 1993 live album by 10,000 Maniacs, recorded for the MTV Unplugged series. Between the recording and release of the album, vocalist Natalie Merchant left the band to pursue a solo career. In addition to the songs released on the album, the following other songs were recorded: Four takes of "How You've Grown"; second takes of "Gold Rush Brides" and Bruce Springsteen and Patti Smith's "Because the Night", respectively; a brief take of "Puff the Magic Dragon"; and three other songs with David Byrne as a guest singer (two takes of "Let the Mystery Be", one of which was released as a B-side to "Few and Far Between" and on Campfire Songs: The Popular, Obscure and Unknown Recordings of 10,000 Maniacs; Dolly Parton's "Jolene"; and "Dallas"). |
